On my behalf

It is the dead

Not the living, who make the longest demands:

We die forever…

(Antigone in Sophocles 442 a. C., 4)

Every instant, thousands of deceased and mourners are having the last farewell. The final demand is then a proper funeral rite, as Antigone claims, whereby death can find its own dwelling, meanwhile, grievers can honor them. They are many cultural and religious dictums in funerals around the world, depending on multiple factors. Occasionally, the rituals are insufficient or impossible to perform, and the sorrow devours individual and communities.

In many other places, music and dance are a fundamental part of funerals, where it could be considered a significant manifestation of love and respect for the deceased. In some cases, it is even mandatory to perform as part of the burial, otherwise, misfortune could fall in those alive.

Here are a series of videos from diverse backgrounds and places around the world. From Ghana, Taiwan, New Orleans, Madagascar, Colombia, and Greece. These visual examples have been the first material to explore the process of preparing and defining the curatorial project.
